Greater Boston PFLAG Announces Two New Board Members

September 15, 2020, Boston, MA — Greater Boston PFLAG is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members of the Greater Boston PFLAG Board of Directors, bringing the total board size to nine.

Joining the Board of Directors are Maureo Fernandez y Mora (he/they) and Alyssa Rayman-Read (she/her). “We’re excited to add two new members to our board who will bring their unique expertise and insight to help us to continue to build upon our strategic plan  and bring forward our mission to advocate for and advance equity and societal affirmation of LGBTQ+ people”, Sunnie Kaufmann-Paulman (she/her), Executive Director.

Maureo Fernandez y Mora currently serves as Associate State Director of Clean Water Action Massachusetts. Originally from New Mexico, Maureo began organizing around racial justice and queer/trans liberation in high school- and hasn’t stopped. In addition to their external organizing work, which has included community outreach for renewable energy campaigns in New Mexico, mutual aid work within QTPOC communities, and advocating for the removal of lead service lines in environmental justice communities in Massachusetts; they have taken on issues of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within every institution they've been a part of.

Maureo draws on their own experiences as a young non-binary trans person of color navigating systemic oppression to develop policies that bridge equity gaps and create working cultures that invite and honor people’s whole authentic selves. Maureo believes deeply in the power of relationships and community healing, which is why they are so excited to join Boston PFLAG and be part of an organization that works to support loving and respectful relationships between young LGBTQIA+ individuals and those that care for them.

Maureo attended the United World College as a Davis Scholar, where they received an International Baccalaureate Diploma, as well as Smith College where they completed a BA in Government with a focus on international relations. When they aren’t working, Maureo enjoys cooking, moving their body, and making music.

Alyssa Rayman-Read is currently the Vice President and Director of CLF Massachusetts and has focused her career on reducing inequalities that undermine working families, and on protecting and enhancing the rights of vulnerable populations. Prior to joining CLF, Rayman-Read was Assistant General Counsel and Director of Labor Engagement at Northeastern University, advising the university’s senior executive team on labor relations, strategic communications, and organizational development. She also investigated and prosecuted unfair labor practice complaints across New England at the National Labor Relations Board. Alyssa is a frequent speaker, educator, and advocate on gender and sexuality rights, and serves as Commissioner on the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth.

Alyssa has a J.D. from Georgetown University Law School, an MA from Union Theological Seminary where she received the Charles A. Briggs Award for “Courage, Conscious, and Commitment,” and her BA with honors from Swarthmore College. Following law school, Alyssa clerked for federal judge Francisco A. Besosa in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. Before embarking on her legal career, Alyssa was a policy journalist, editor, and writer translating complex legal and legislative concepts to diverse audiences.

We are thrilled to have two new powerful advocates joining our team, and we are continuing to expand our board. Greater Boston PFLAG works day in and day out to change the culture of communities from the ground up. Your time and talents are needed to help us achieve long-term, sustainable change.
